As a consulting business startup, here’s what you need to know.
There are professionals who don’t want anything to do with unpleasant relationships. If you’re one of them, then starting a consulting business may not be a wise move for you.
Bear in mind that a consulting business involves a lot of face-to-face business transaction. You meet different kinds of clients and start a working relationship with them. But not all of them are pleasant to work with; but when you’re just starting out, it’s hard to turn away business!
You are being paid for your knowledge.
Consultants are hired for one obvious reason: knowledge.
You need to assert your knowledge for which you were hired. Keep in mind that your client pays you to work on their behalf because you are expert at something they are not. That only means that you should tell them like it is. Deliver the knowledge they paid for.
Remember that your knowledge is a deliverable. Thus if you’re not delivering it in full, you’ll be losing the quality of your service.
You’re selling yourself to potential clients.
You might not like how it sounds but a consultant sells him or herself. That is just how business is done in this industry. Focus on successfully selling yourself; be prepared to do the following:
- Look as good as the services you offer.
- Put a big price tag on your services. More often than not, people associate higher costs with higher quality. Thus, the more you charge, the more clients will consider your work to be valuable.
- Prove that you’re worth the money. You shouldn’t just look it - you’ve got to be it. Deliver services as promised and do your best.
- Be trustworthy. Trustworthiness is important in the consulting industry. No one will hire your services if you can’t be trusted. But if they do hire you, chances are they won’t take your advice. Thus, establishing trust is essential for the success of your business.
At some point, you will get disappointed.
In any business venture, there will be moments where you’ll absolutely be devastated professionally and personally. A consulting business can take a toll on you emotionally. Regardless of how you respond to a challenge, one thing is for sure: you will face failure and disappointment.
There’s not an easy way to get through challenging situations, but the best way to prepare is to expect it and be ready for it (emotionally, mentally, physically, or financially).
It’s important to note that starting any type of business is not as easy as 1-2-3. There will be challenges unique to your venture. What’s important though is that you should be prepared to protect your finances and reputation. How? That’s through getting business insurance.
