Your employees want to feel safe. Creating a safety program for an auto shop often takes a backseat to operations. You get busy. There are other more pressing concerns. It’s completely understandable.
While you probably have access to safety and pollution prevention training, it’s usually only seen by management or ownership and a few things might be implemented at best. If you have a regular safety training program in place for management, ownership, and all employees, you’re ahead of 95% of other shops. Most shops have a manager or owner trained, but no regular training going on for all members of the team.
1. Adopt a regular quarterly training schedule and put it on your shop calendar (make participation mandatory)
This simple step of putting your safety training schedule on the calendar is a huge leap in the right direction. When it’s on your calendar and you put it out there to all of your staff, they’re going to expect it and eventually they’ll even ask for specific topics to be discussed.
2. Implement one new safety plan improvement every quarter
Instead of just talking the talk, walk the walk. Let your employees help to decide what you’ll implement next in your safety program. Select one or two improvements to make every quarter and you’ll be well on your way to a safer and happier environment for everyone.
3. Document adjustments to your safety program
It’s easy to lose sight of where you started. A new employee comes in and only gets part of your safety plan in one of these meetings if you are not documenting adjustments. Your safety program should be a living document of all of the do’s, do not’s, and processes that are to be followed to improve both safety and health in the shop. This living document can be printed or shared digitally and you can keep it on the cloud to access anywhere. You should be updating your safety program quarterly to help employees avoid any injuries that have occurred or that you think might occur. The great thing about having your safety program on the cloud (using something like Google Docs) is that you can update it on your phone when ideas for updating safety are shared with you or a safety manager.

Western Pacific Insurance highly recommends that you implement an Employee Safety & Injury Prevention Program that will be integrated with your regular training schedule. With this, you’ll divide up safety responsibilities among your team, track injuries (giving you vital information on how to reduce injuries and overall safety and health of employees), and maintain excellent records compliance for OSHA.
