The right way to wash your car starts with using the right equipment. Luckily, it is fairly easy and affordable to purchase these items. All you need are the following:
- microfiber cloth or mitt
- a soft bristled brush
- bottle of car shampoo
It sounds simple enough, but each should be right to make washing your car easier and safer.
Let's start with the bucket. Choose one that is big enough for your to make enough shampoo solution to wash your car. Having one that is too little makes you mix multiple times during 1 wash. Too big might be difficult to move around. You will also have the tendency of making too much which can be wasteful.
As for your washing cloth and brush, make sure they are soft enough not to scratch the surface. This is very important as this can easily damage your paint. Lastly, use shampoo specifically designed for a car. This removes dirt and grime, without stripping the protective coat of your paint. Avoid using dishwashing liquid or other soaps as these can damage you surface. They are designed to strip off grease and can affect the wax or top coat of your car.
Washing the car
Follow the correct ratio of shampoo and water when mixing in the solution. Wet your car and then apply the soap mixture using your microfiber mitt or cloth. Use a circular motion and start from the roof down to the bottom of the car. Use the cloth for most areas and the brush for dirtier areas that may have thicker dirt. It is a good idea to rinse this immediately and not let the solution dry on the paint.
Drying the car
Avoid letting your car air dry after rinsing. Wipe it down with a clean microfiber cloth. Preferably a different cloth from what you used to soap the car. Drying immediately with the cloth will prevent water spots due to the minerals found in the water.
